Community Celebration to Mark Dedication of Historic Redwood City Statue

An early Redwood City landmark statue, missing since being vandalized 30 years ago, will be replaced by a new bronze replica and dedicated in ceremonies at the Historic Union Cemetery on Saturday, May 8, beginning at 2:00 p.m.

The seven-foot tall bronze Civil War Union Soldier is a detailed reconstruction of the original 1889 statue and is expected to become a new local landmark at the pioneer cemetery located on Woodside Road west of El Camino Real.

The celebration will include band music, a color guard and 21-gun salute by Civil War reenactors, food, dedication presentations by local government and community organization leaders and historical tours of the cemetery.

The statue reconstruction effort is a project of the Historic Union Cemetery Association, a local organization dedicated to the preservation and enhancement of the pioneer cemetery that dates to 1859.

Working with the Redwood City Parks and Recreation Department, the Association spearheaded a coalition of community organizations to raise money over a six-year period for recreating the statue and played a key role in enlisting community support for the dedication ceremonies.

The Historic Union Cemetery was the first cemetery association in the State of California and served early settlers in the Redwood City, Searsville and Woodside areas. It is a California Historic Landmark and is on the National Register of Historic Places.
