Gone to Rest
[Mrs. J. C. Murphey]
We are again called upon to announce the death of another our beloved and esteemed citizens and neighbors, Mrs. J. C. Murphey, widow of the late J.C. Murphey, one of our old time respected citizens.
Mrs. Murphey departed this life at the residence of her daughter Mrs. A. A. Boone on the 23rd of this month, surrounded by her sorrowing family, with the exception of her son George C. Kinney, it being impossible for him to arrive here in time.
Mrs. J. C. Murphey was born near Syracuse, State of New York on the 11th day of November 1829 and was married to George Kinney when twenty years of age, and came to California in 1851, and resided at Central, near Woodland, in California until 1864. There were three children of this marriage, Mrs. Ada A. Boone, Daniel D. and George C. Kinney, the former and later of whom are living. In 1859 she married John C. Murphey in Sacramento, after having been divorced from her former husband. There were five children of this marriage, James, John D. (now Judge of the Superior Court of this County), Lewis A., Edward A. and Bertha A. James died before the family moved to Mono County and Bertha A. died in this County, leaving a husband and daughter, Mr. B. L. Simmons and Viola Simmons. The Kinney boys are grandchildren of the deceased.
After coming to California, Mrs. Murphey returned once to the scenes of her childhood and was absent about one year. After coming to Mono she lived here continuiously, except about three years in the early seventies when the family was in southern California.
And thus another pioneer woman has gone. Gone to her Eternal Rest, to receive the glad words "Come ye children of my Father, inherit the Kingdom prepared for you from the beginning."
With the loss of Mrs. Murphey or as she was familiarly known, Grandma Murphey, it can be truly said that her children have lost a loving mother, the people a kind neighbor, and surely one of those familiar pioneer ladies, whose every thought was goodness and kindness. She leaves a place that will be missed by all. To the sorrowing family we extend sincerest sympathy because we know the love they always had for "Mother."
- Rest in Peace -
The funeral took place from the residence of Mrs. Boone on Thursday last at 2 P. M. It was very largely attended, all the old neighbors and friends of deceased, meeting to show their last tribute of respect, and many wet eyes were seen as the services were going on.
Services were held at the house and at the grave. Wm. O. Parker read the Episcopal Burial Service, and the Choir sang the old pieces, Jesus Lover of My Soul, Rock of Ages and Nearer my God to Thee.
